Ricardo Lopez Cabrera

Ricardo Lopez Cabrera was born in Cantillana (Seville) in 1.864, and died in Seville in 1.950. He is one of the Sevillian painters, exponents of 19th century Spanish painting, who left the School of Fine Arts of Santa Isabel de Hungary in Seville. There, it was disciple of Jimenez Aranda and Eduardo Cano, and he even related to one of them when he married the daughter of José Jiménez Aranda.

Although he began his training and career as a painter in Seville, when he was 23 years old, he decided expand your studies in Rome, thanks to a position that he obtained by opposition and that included a pension for his sustenance. In the four years that he spent in Rome, he showed himself as a painter especially concerned with mastering perspective and drawing. As a result of these years, we can enjoy one of his best works: A Victorious Gladiator (1.888), which is exposed in the Museum of Fine Arts of Seville.

On his return to Spain, he began to participate in National Fine Arts Exhibitions, in which he achieved a certain notoriety thanks to the awarding of medals on three occasions (1.892, 1.895 and 1.898). He also participated in the Chicago International Competition in 1.893 with four of his works. In 1.906 it became part of the Academy of Fine Arts of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary in Seville. His international dimension continued, spending more than ten years in Argentina (1.911-1.923) where his pictorial production was extensive, and where he also had great activity in exhibition matters.

Back in Spain, he became fully involved in a project that led him to paint triptychs dedicated to each and every one of the Spanish regions and their customs, all of which were exhibited with great success in the Madrid Fine Arts Circle in 1.928.

His last years were spent in Spain, passing away in Seville in 1.950.

Throughout his life, his work ranges from costumbrismo, to landscape and even portraiture, all influenced by Sorolla's enlightenment style, although Fortuny was one of his main references in the beginning.

He also made forays into the orientalist style influenced by a trip he made to Morocco.
