José Flores Candle

He was born in Valencia on February 21, 1817 and died on December 15, 1878 at the age of 61 years. José Flores Candle was a Spanish painter who excelled as a set designer during the 19th century.

Next, we tell you some brushstrokes of his life and work as we have done with other authors such as: Andrés Cortés and Aguilar o Adolfo Giraldez Penalver.

There are several well-known set designers in his family and it was his own half-brother José Vicente Pérez Vela who was in charge of his training. In 1846, at the age of 29, he showed in the exhibition created by the Royal Economic Society of Friends of the Country of Valencia, works made on transparent canvases that presented the door of the Apostles of the cathedral and the naumaquias (a show in which he was represented a naval battle) that took place for the royal weddings that took place that same year.

He carried out several works of ephemeral decoration of a religious nature mainly and collaborated vigorously in the first July Fair, held in 1871, for which he painted the triumphal arch erected by Campo at the entrance to the Fair.

Among his many scenography works, those carried out in:

  • The Princess theater.
  • The theater-café on Calle de Ruzafa.
  • In the theater of the Spanish Circus.
  • The Principal.
  • And the theaters in the towns of Valencia: Carcajente, Llombay and Alcira.

The last scenographic piece by José Flores Vela was based on making 23 decorations for the work La Virgen de la Buena Guía. A comedy and magic show by Antonio María Ballester, whose director was Amalia Morote. He died shortly after the premiere of the work.
