In the work presented, Alfonso Grosso fuses the three fundamental aspects of his work: the portrait, the genre of manners and the religious. In this way, we find ourselves inside a room featuring a young woman who, dressed in white and long robes, prays beside the bed. The young woman, who in turn wears a headdress that covers her two long braids, directs a melancholic gaze towards the ground, in a tremendously expressive gesture. She holds in her hands a rosary that, next to the book on the bed - most likely the Bible - indicates that the protagonist is in full prayer, absorbed in her mystical thoughts. The calculated arrangement of the elements that make up the room and that give narrativity to the scene stands out to a great extent: the bed broken by the edge of the canvas and which indicates that the room continues, increasing the space of the composition; the crucifix on the bed; the velvety chair on which the young woman rests; the exposed brick -without plaster- behind the protagonist and which refers to the antiquity of the place where we are, possibly a convent in the city of Seville.
