painting José Moreno Carbonero

Malaga-born painter born on March 28, 1860 and died on April 15, 1942 in Madrid. In his works the portraits and historical type scenes. He is considered one of the best of his time and a reference within the Malaga school.

From an early age he began to demonstrate his skills in painting, and although his family did not have the resources to pay for the training he needed, he managed to enter the school of Fine Arts of San Telmo in Malaga thanks to the support of the painter Bernardo Ferrándiz. Ferrándiz was a Valencian painter who lived in Malaga and was characterized in other things by helping several students with few resources who could not afford their classes.

In 1871 he finished his training at the School of Fine Arts, and a year later and only at the age of 12, he won the gold medal of the Exhibition of the Liceo de Málaga for the work La posada de la corona.

In the following years he made several trips with his mentor, Ferrándiz. First to Morocco, where he meets several painters like Fortuny or Martín Rico who mark his style and becomes more 'realistic' in his works. Later he would travel to Paris to continue his studies and work alongside the well-known painter Jean-Leon Gérôme, who ultimately marked his career because of his taste for historical works.

Finally, and after having tried on other occasions without success, José Moreno Carbonero managed to be a pensioner in the Spanish school of Fine Arts in Rome where he also learns from Italian painters and performs works such as The Sweating Goal.

During his last years He worked as a teacher and had outstanding students such as Juan Gris and Salvador Dalí. When he died he had the recognition of all for his life and work and is considered one of the best of his time along with others such as Picasso, although José Moreno Carbonero enjoyed better acceptance between high society and the aristocracy for having a less transgressive character than his counterpart.
