Andrés Cortés y Aguilar was born in Seville on December 24 in 1812 and died on May 16, 1879. He was a Spanish painter who managed to be, thanks to his spectacular work, one of the greatest references of 19th century paintings, especially of the romantic landscaping and the Andalusian costumbrismo. His vocation came from family as his predecessors were well known in the Sevillian school.

His father, Antonio Cortés, lived in France and had been a student of one of the most famous landscapers of the time. This certainly left its mark on the author. that from an early age began to portray landscapes with flocks and achieved success by being the most prominent painters in this mode at the time.

In 1840 he settled in Seville and there he continued the rest of his life consolidating his artistic career. He was a professor at the School of Fine Arts and a member of his Academy since 1862.

Some of his best-known works that acquired great popularity among Sevillian high society are: his versions of the Seville Fair and the paintings for the count of Ybarra. Above all, one made in 1852 that is in the Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao. In addition to his famous landscapes, he also made a portrait and some works with religious content.

Intervened in the exhibitions of Fine Arts that took place in Seville and in 1858 he was awarded a silver medal for the work 'A country'. He enjoyed great popularity and distinction in his hometown, becoming president of his Arts class, correspondent of the Royal Academy of Archeology and Geography of Prince Don Alfonso and that of Cordoba among many other awards and awards.
